Construction of the 400kV Mozambique-Malawi Electricity Interconnector has concluded, according to Nyasa Times. The transmission line was successfully energized with an initial 5 megawatts of electricity imported from Mozambique for testing at the Matambo Substation. A Ministry of Energy statement cited by Nyasa Times indicates that full commercial power trading will begin once ongoing tariff negotiations yield commercially viable pricing. Meanwhile, the Consumer Association of Malawi continues to push for cost-reflective rates.

Money transacted through Malawi's National Payments System fell by 28.4 percent to K52 trillion in the first quarter of 2026, dropping from K72.7 trillion in the previous quarter, Capital FM reports. This decline aligns with continued warnings from the International Monetary Fund regarding the country's macroeconomic stability, as reported by Malawi24. The global financial body cited persistent deficits, foreign exchange shortages, and high inflation as ongoing challenges for the Malawian economy.

Several Malawian businesses have posted strong financial results despite the difficult economic environment. CDH Investment Bank recorded a 124 percent increase in half-year profit after tax, reaching K41 billion for the six months ending June 30, 2026, according to Nyasa Times. Furthermore, Nyasa Times reports that Umodzi Holdings Limited, the state-owned operator of Umodzi Park Resorts, announced a first-quarter profit of K1.2 billion, reflecting a 14.5 percent rise driven by increased conference and event bookings.

Update: A World Bank delegation is in Malawi for a five-day mission to review the $150 million Digital Malawi Acceleration Project, Pan African Visions reports. Task team leaders Tim Kelly and Paul Ndungutse met with Public Private Partnership Commission Chief Executive Officer Arthur Nanthuru to discuss institutional coordination, procurement, and the project's work plan for the 2026 to 2027 financial year.
