Update: The Tobacco Commission has announced that the 2026 tobacco marketing season will officially close on September 10 across the country's four markets in Limbe, Lilongwe, Mzuzu, and Chinkhoma. According to Nyasa Times and Malawi24, the season is concluding with a significant drop in revenue. The market fetched $282.5 million from 142.4 million kilograms of tobacco sold over the first 19 weeks of trading. This marks a sharp decline from the $500.4 million realized from 197.2 million kilograms during the same period last year. Officials attribute the drop to lower overall sales volumes, falling average prices, and high rejection rates on the auction floors.

In a push to improve soil health and crop yields, Malawi launched its AgroEcology Week on September 1. The event focuses on promoting organic farming systems and conservation agriculture across the country.

Additionally, private sector leaders and policymakers are pressing for more investment in the farming sector at the Africa Food Systems Forum 2026 in Kigali, Rwanda. According to Times 360 Malawi, the Malawian government used the early September summit to present its Mega Farm Investment Programme. Officials argue that expanded credit access and private financing are necessary to improve the agricultural value chain and ensure long-term food security.
