According to Nation Online, police in Mangochi have arrested eight suspects for malicious damage and unlawful wounding after community members vandalised the Chilipa Police Unit and injured an officer. The riot erupted over disagreements regarding the police handling of a missing 14-year-old boy, Alli Nuru. The suspects were apprehended on September 2. The missing teenager was subsequently found alive in Balaka Township, where he had been working without his family knowing.
In an effort to improve security and reduce corruption, the Malawi Police Service has introduced an electronic payment system for traffic fines, ITWeb Africa reports. The digital platform became operational this week at the Lilongwe Police Headquarters and across six police regions. Traffic offenders can now pay their penalties directly through commercial banks, such as the National Bank of Malawi, and mobile money services like Airtel Money and TNM Mpamba.
Update: Former State House aide Collins Magalasi has appeared before Chief Resident Magistrate Austin Banda to face formal cybercrime charges, according to Malawi24. Magalasi is accused of supplying an HP laptop and contact details to an information technology expert to facilitate the hacking of mobile phones belonging to former President Peter Mutharika and several senior government officials, including the Inspector General of Police.
Meanwhile, police in Zomba arrested an ex-convict for livestock theft just months after his release from a maximum security prison, reports Malawi24. Detectives from the Chinamwali Police Unit apprehended Chifunilo Matumbi on September 2 after he was caught offering two stolen pigs for sale at highly discounted prices at a local trading centre.
