He emphasized that the office of a magistrate is held in trust for the public and requires strict adherence to the Constitution. In court proceedings, the High Court in Kasungu has approved a request by the State to add a child desertion charge against former Malawi Defence Force soldier Medium Nyirongo. Nyasa Times reports that Nyirongo was already facing a murder charge. The former soldier admitted to leaving his young son in a forest but claimed it was not intentional. He has entered fresh pleas of not guilty to both counts as the trial moves forward.
Update: The Malawi Government has formally distanced itself from the ongoing legal proceedings against National Assembly Speaker Sameer Suleman. In a press release issued on September 5, Information Minister Shadrick Namalomba stated that the government did not initiate, sponsor, or fund the court case against the Speaker. According to Nyasa Times, Namalomba clarified that the lawsuit was filed by a private citizen acting in a personal capacity. He reaffirmed the executive branch's respect for the independence of the legislature and the courts following earlier scrutiny of the Speaker.
Meanwhile, two South African girls who were trafficked into Malawi have been successfully rescued and returned to their home country. According to SABC News and Independent Online, the victims, aged 9 and 15, were taken across the border by a Malawian man and a South African woman. South African Social Development Minister Dina Pule confirmed that the girls were rescued after their mother and grandmother escaped back to South Africa and alerted authorities to the crime.
