Malawi and Mozambique are taking steps to strengthen their bilateral ties following recent diplomatic and trade engagements. On September 9, Ambassador Chimango Edward Chirwa, Secretary for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, officially received letters of credence from Mozambique's High Commissioner-Designate to Malawi, Laurinda Fernando Saide Banze. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, these diplomatic protocols prepare the ground for President Arthur Peter Mutharika and Mozambican President Daniel Chapo to conclude bilateral discussions. The new cooperation agreements will focus on trade, investments, energy, mining, and a nearly finalized power interconnection project.
In a related move to boost regional integration, the COMESA-EAC-SADC Tripartite held a capacity-building program from September 8 to 9 for border officials at the Chiponde-Mandimba border post between Malawi and Mozambique. According to allAfrica, the training is designed to strengthen the Tripartite Simplified Trade Regime. The regional initiative seeks to reduce administrative barriers, formalize informal trade, and support small-scale cross-border traders operating along the Nacala Corridor.
Update: On the international financing front, Malawi has secured new pledges to ease its foreign exchange pressures. Nyasa Times reports that on September 8, Minister of Finance Joseph Mwanamvekha confirmed Malawi is among the first countries selected to benefit from the African Development Bank (AfDB) Global Energy and Fertiliser Crisis Response Framework. The financial intervention will assist the government in importing essential fuel and fertiliser. Furthermore, the AfDB board has approved $20.5 million, or approximately K34 billion, in direct budget support for the country, according to Nation Online.
