President Peter Mutharika hosted the Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) at Kamuzu Palace on Friday, calling for a closer partnership between the government and the private sector, according to Malawi Cables. During the September 11 meeting, Mutharika stressed that active cooperation is necessary to manage current economic difficulties and the agricultural impacts of El NiƱo. MCCCI President Ronald Ngwira expressed appreciation for the dialogue and pledged the business community's support in promoting trade and investment.

Update: The dispute over parliamentary oversight has deepened, as the executive branch pushes back against Speaker of Parliament Sameer Suleman. Following a recent High Court order that temporarily blocked Parliament from investigating several state-owned enterprises, Chief Secretary Justin Saidi issued a statement on September 10 questioning the legality of the Speaker's actions. According to Malawi24, Saidi argued that the authority to establish ad hoc investigative committees belongs to the National Assembly as a whole, rather than the Speaker alone.

Meanwhile, a defamation dispute involving the judiciary continues to experience administrative delays. On September 11, activist Kamangila wrote to High Court Judge Howard Pemba to demand a hearing date for his case involving Judge Kenan Manda, Malawi24 reports. Kamangila stated that the two-month delay in processing his application has denied him a fair opportunity to be heard in court.

Update: As scheduled blackouts continue to affect the country, the national grid suffered another sudden failure this week. The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) confirmed that a nationwide power outage struck late on September 9 due to a complete system shutdown, according to Nyasa Times. ESCOM officials issued a statement apologizing for the disruption and indicated that technical teams are currently investigating the exact cause of the grid collapse.
