Norway has announced plans to close its embassy in Malawi by the end of July 2027 as part of a restructuring of its foreign service. According to Nyasa Times and official statements, Norwegian Foreign Affairs Minister Espen Barth Eide attributed the decision to global security challenges and a need to reallocate diplomatic resources. The embassy has operated in Lilongwe since 2000, overseeing approximately 93 billion kwacha in annual development assistance directed toward health, agriculture, and governance. Norwegian Minister of International Development Åsmund Aukrust stated that development cooperation will continue through multilateral channels and civil society partnerships.
In regional trade developments, the COMESA-EAC-SADC Tripartite is conducting a training programme for border authorities to facilitate small-scale commerce between Malawi and Mozambique. Pan African Visions reports that the sessions, scheduled through September 12 at the Calomue-Dedza and Chiponde-Mandimba border posts, target customs officials, immigration officers, and cross-border traders. The initiative aims to improve the application of the Tripartite Simplified Trade Regime and ease the movement of goods along major trade routes.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also reported several diplomatic meetings this week to advance economic policies. Secretary for Foreign Affairs Chimango Edward Chirwa met with United Nations Economic Commission for Africa Regional Director Eunice Kamwendo in Lilongwe on September 10 to discuss technical support for Malawi's foreign policy and its mining sector. This followed September 9 discussions in Ethiopia between Minister of Foreign Affairs George Chaponda and UNECA Executive Secretary Claver Gatete. Furthermore, Malawi welcomed Mozambique's new High Commissioner-Designate, Laurinda Fernando Saide Banze, who presented her credentials on September 9 to strengthen bilateral trade and energy cooperation.
