Update: Former Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (Mera) chief executive officer Collins Magalasi will remain on remand at Maula Prison after a scheduled court session for his bail application failed to proceed on Friday, Face of Malawi reports. The hearing has been rescheduled for Monday. Magalasi is currently facing multiple charges, including allegations of cyber spying as well as fresh charges of money laundering and theft connected to the Public Service Pension Trust Fund.
In Lilongwe, Kanengo Police Station has arrested two more suspects in connection with the armed robbery and murder of a nine-month pregnant woman in Area 25, according to the Malawi News Agency. The suspects, identified as Jackson Tembo and Matius Chilamba, bring the total number of individuals arrested for the crime to three. Police officials stated that investigations are continuing in an effort to recover the pistol used during the attack, which also left the woman's husband seriously injured.
Meanwhile, human rights activist and lawyer Alexious Kamangila has written to High Court Judge Howard Pemba demanding a hearing date for his application in an ongoing defamation lawsuit filed by High Court Judge Kenan Manda, Nyasa Times and Malawi24 report. Kamangila complained that he has waited nearly two months for a hearing after his defence was struck out in May. In response, Assistant Registrar Benjamin Chulu demanded an explanation from Kamangila for livestreaming a virtual scheduling conference on Facebook without court authorization. Kamangila defended the broadcast, arguing that the public interest surrounding the case requires transparency within the justice system.
