Vice President Jane Mayemu Ansah has pledged K1 million to Mlambe Hospital in Blantyre following a visit that highlighted severe resource shortages at the facility. According to Pan African Visions, Ansah initially visited the hospital to check on an admitted patient but expanded her financial support after management briefed her on critical needs. Principal Nursing and Midwifery Officer Anna Balley and Hospital Administrator Sister Florence Manja informed the Vice President that the facility is struggling with a lack of specialized beds, inadequate medical equipment, and broad financial constraints. Manja noted that the hospital also faces increased operational pressure from patients crossing the border from neighboring Mozambique to seek medical care.
Update: In Lilongwe, a health project led by ADRA Malawi is working to address the pediatric diabetes crisis at Kabudula Community Hospital. AfricaBrief reports that the initiative is currently supporting 52 children and young adults with Type 1 diabetes by providing free insulin, syringes, glucometers, and psychosocial counseling. This assistance comes as many rural patients face severe medical supply shortages, with some previously forced to reuse disposable syringes for up to a month. While the project has improved patient turnout and helped dispel local myths about the disease, health officials warn that long travel distances and entrenched cultural beliefs still prevent some patients from attending routine medical check-ups.
