Update: According to Nyasa Times, Malawi's winter maize seed initiative at the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) is preparing to begin seed processing. Project coordinator Lameck Fiwa announced on September 10 that the 150-hectare Mega Farm Initiative at Dwangwa in Nkhotakota district is on track to conclude by mid-October. The project aims to tackle shortages in seed availability and affordability for the upcoming Farm Input Subsidy Programme.
Meanwhile, the Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) is facing major maize procurement challenges. Nation Online reports that ADMARC spokesperson Teresa Chapulapula confirmed the corporation is currently not buying maize because it has exhausted its initial K5 billion allocation. The agency has only purchased about 3,700 metric tonnes of its target for the season. In response to the shortfall, the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) has opened its own maize market to help secure national supplies.
A new economic modeling report from the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and CGIAR, published on September 11, warns that overlapping shocks from El Niño and rising global fertilizer costs pose severe risks for Malawi into 2027. According to IFPRI, researchers project that if climate conditions significantly reduce crop yields, the country will face falling GDP, rising domestic food prices, and increased levels of undernourishment.
Update: Following his recent meetings with the Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI), President Peter Mutharika has formally called for a stronger private sector role in addressing the El Niño agricultural crisis. Pan African Visions reports that Mutharika urged businesses to help maintain supply chains and stabilize local markets. An estimated 1.9 million Malawians are facing acute food insecurity through September.
