The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture have awarded US$60,000 in grants to three district councils to address local service delivery problems, according to UNDP Malawi. Through the Youth in Leadership Innovation Challenge, the district councils of Zomba, Likoma, and Mangochi each received US$20,000 to design and test youth-led digital solutions. The winners were announced during a ceremony at the UNDP Malawi Country Office in Lilongwe. Speaking at the event, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Dr. Chika Charles Aniekwe urged the country's young population to take an active role in national development and leadership.
In other economic and international development news, the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) is urging the government to define its own critical minerals priorities rather than relying on foreign market demands, according to university announcements. During a meeting with the Mining and Minerals Regulatory Authority on September 12, Associate Professor Chikondi Chisenga introduced a university project aimed at creating a domestic critical minerals strategy through data and energy systems planning. Dr. Chisenga noted that minerals targeted by international investors may not necessarily match Malawi's domestic development needs, highlighting the importance of stakeholder cooperation to direct the value of local resources toward national priorities.
