According to the Malawi News Network, a newly released parliamentary committee report on the hotel inquiry recommends that administrative and legal action be taken against Nyirongo. The report also advises that he be disqualified from holding positions of fiduciary responsibility in public institutions due to his role in advancing the transaction against regulatory directives.
In other news, the Malawi Police Service in Nkhata Bay has arrested 25-year-old Wilson Kabaghe for impersonating a Malawi Defence Force soldier. According to local authorities and TWR Malawi, Kabaghe was arrested on September 13 after he lodged at Ilala Bay Lodge, falsely claimed he was collecting intelligence ahead of a presidential visit, and left without settling his accommodation bill.
Update: The Office of the Speaker has formally suspended its plans to establish Joint Committees intended to investigate several state bodies following a High Court injunction. According to Nyasa Times, Speaker Sameer Suleman confirmed that the committees will stand down in compliance with a court order obtained by a private citizen who legally challenged the investigative powers of Parliament. The suspension of the probes comes shortly after Suleman held talks with President Peter Mutharika regarding the constitutional separation of powers between the Executive, Parliament, and the Judiciary.
