Malawi is marking the first anniversary of President Peter Mutharika and the Democratic Progressive Party returning to power following the 2025 elections. Coinciding with the anniversary on September 16, the government launched the Nzika Digital ID Wallet and announced the removal of expiry dates from National Identity Cards, according to Nyasa Times. Minister of Homeland Security Peter Mukhito directed the National Registration Bureau to begin issuing the expiry-free cards immediately to spare citizens the recurring cost of renewal.

The anniversary has drawn criticism from the opposition. According to Nyasa Times, the Malawi Congress Party branded the ruling party's first year in office as a period of hardship for citizens. Opposition publicity secretary Jessie Kabwila accused the administration of failing to address corruption, neglecting farmers, and allowing university fees to become unaffordable. Government spokesperson Shadreck Namalomba responded that the administration is preparing its own public assessment to detail its economic record.

To enforce fiscal discipline, the Malawi government has suspended all state-funded workshops, seminars, and meetings held outside public institutions. A directive signed on September 15 by Chief Secretary to the Government Justin Adack K. Saidi ordered ministries to utilize internal conference rooms instead of hiring external venues, according to Tuntufye FM. The directive aims to cut unnecessary expenditure and reserve public funds for essential services.

Update: Internal political tensions continue as the Consumers Association of Malawi has raised alarms over the reported sidelining of Vice President Jane Ansah. According to Malawi24, the association's Executive Director John Kapito sent a letter on September 15 warning that excluding the Vice President's office from public engagements and constraining its resources undermines national accountability. Kapito urged Ansah to address the public directly regarding the marginalization of her constitutional office.
