Up to 17 percent of Malawian couples of reproductive age are currently facing infertility, according to Malawi24. The ongoing struggle to conceive has pushed many individuals to seek alternative treatments, with couples turning to everything from local traditional healers to expensive medical procedures outside the country.
In regulatory news, the Pharmacy and Medicines Regulatory Authority (PMRA) has issued a public warning regarding recalled medications, Malawi24 reports. The affected drugs include Nifedipine 10mg and Levodopa/Carbidopa tablets manufactured by Remedica Ltd. The authority noted that these specific products are not registered for use in Malawi and were recalled following an alert from the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe regarding out-of-specification results during stability testing. The PMRA has directed all healthcare facilities, pharmacies, and drug stores to immediately quarantine the affected stock and halt all distribution and dispensing.
Update: Health officials are expanding their response to the country's measles outbreak with a new nationwide Measles-Rubella Supplementary Vaccination Campaign scheduled for September 21 to 25. According to Nyasa Times and Ministry of Health data, authorities recorded 376 confirmed cases of the disease between January and August 2026. The upcoming campaign will target all children aged 9 months to 9 years regardless of their previous vaccination status. Children aged 6 months to 5 years will also receive Vitamin A supplementation during the exercise.
