Review Highlights Impact of £1.6 Billion UK Aid to Malawi Since 2009

Wednesday, September 16, 2026

On September 16, the Center for Global Development published a review evaluating the outcomes of 1.6 billion pounds in United Kingdom financial assistance provided to Malawi since 2009. The report, authored by Ian Mitchell and previewed by The Independent, arrives as the UK adjusts its direct bilateral aid allocations across several African nations.

According to the Center for Global Development, the 17 years of British funding provided essential healthcare access for more than three million Malawians. The analysis notes that the assistance also prevented millions of unintended pregnancies and expanded public access to clean water and educational resources before recent aid cuts took effect.
