Law enforcement agencies across Malawi have made multiple arrests in recent days involving violent crimes and mob justice. In Chileka, police arrested 16 individuals in connection with the alleged killing of 35-year-old Fixon Menyauti. Menyauti was fatally assaulted after being falsely accused of stealing a motorcycle, according to Face of Malawi. Furthermore, the Malawi News Agency reports that police in Mzuzu arrested 30-year-old Elias Chisale for the alleged murder of 23-year-old Aaron Odeni. The fatal stabbing reportedly occurred following a dispute over a woman at an unfinished house in Malivenji Trading Centre.

In the courts, the Dedza First Grade Magistrate's Court sentenced 44-year-old Catherine Silvester to 14 years in prison with hard labour. Malawi24 reports that Silvester was convicted of setting fire to her brother's house and injuring him following a dispute over bamboo. In a separate legal development, 20-year-old Kamuzu Barracks Secondary School student Esther Hassan was granted bail this week after spending a month in Kachere Women's Prison over allegations of a mobile phone theft, according to Malawi24.

Police operations have also led to the seizure of illegal firearms and arrests for assault. Face of Malawi reports that officers in Mulanje apprehended a 23-year-old suspect after recovering a Jericho semi-automatic pistol and three rounds of live ammunition. Meanwhile, in Mzimba, authorities arrested a 35-year-old man accused of committing an indecent assault against a four-year-old girl.

Update: The Malawi Police Service has escalated its efforts to locate abducted British national Nusrat Osman. Following the 47-year-old auditor's kidnapping in broad daylight in Blantyre, authorities have launched a nationwide public appeal via SMS and are offering a K30 million reward for credible information leading to her rescue and the prosecution of the perpetrators, according to Nyasa Times.
