Update: The Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services has issued fresh weather alerts for moderate Mvuma winds over Lake Malawi and other inland water bodies. According to a September 16 forecast, authorities are advising all lake users to stay alert to protect life and property as a warm easterly air mass moves over the region.

The meteorological department also released an air quality bulletin on September 15 warning of declining air conditions across parts of southern Malawi. The department noted that the air quality could become unhealthy for sensitive groups and cautioned the public to expect high to very high ultraviolet levels during the afternoon.

Meanwhile, environmental groups launched the Youth-led Global Week of Mobilization for Climate Justice at the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources on September 15, AfricaBrief reports. ActionAid Executive Director Yandura Chipeta used the event to call for an equitable transition to a climate-resilient future, stating that vulnerable communities and young people must lead climate decision-making. Chipeta additionally urged farmers to adopt agroecology to protect local food systems from extreme weather conditions.
