According to Nyasa Times, Malawi's Agriculture Minister Roza Mbilizi is at the center of a fertilizer procurement scandal. The opposition has accused the ruling Democratic Progressive Party of shielding Mbilizi after she allegedly bypassed competitive bidding to award a lucrative supply contract to United Capital Fertilizer Zambia. Further controversy erupted following revelations that her cousin, Hyde Khembo, who serves on the board of the state grain trader SFFRFM, traveled to Zambia to discuss the arrangement months before company executives met with Mbilizi in Lilongwe.

In economic news, Bankers Association of Malawi President Philip Madinga has publicly credited President Peter Mutharika with improving the country's financial stability, Nyasa Times reports. Following a meeting at Kamuzu Palace, Madinga stated that the administration's economic policies have successfully reduced inflation from 28.2 percent in August 2025 to 20.0 percent in August 2026. Interest rates also dropped from 26.0 percent to 24.0 percent over the same period.

Update: As the Malawi Congress Party continues its internal restructuring ahead of the 2030 elections, Kasungu Central Member of Parliament Chikondi Kampachike Chisale has officially entered the race for chairman of the newly created Bua region. Nyasa Times reports that the political party recently divided its central region into three separate administrative areas and its southern region into two, aiming to increase membership and improve internal management.
