Malawi's public hospitals are facing a severe medicine shortage as the Central Medical Stores Trust struggles with an $18 million debt to foreign suppliers, according to Nyasa Times. The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives wrote to the Parliamentary Committee on Health on Tuesday, warning that the trust is only securing a fraction of the $2 million needed monthly to maintain drug supplies. Nyasa Times reports this shortfall threatens the delivery of essential healthcare across the country.

In legislative news, the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs has opened discussions with the Office of the Clerk of Parliament regarding a proposal to introduce Chichewa and other local languages during debates. Lawmakers are pushing to end the National Assembly's English-only tradition to make parliamentary proceedings more accessible and representative of the general public, Nyasa Times reports.

On the economic front, the World Bank released its 23rd Malawi Economic Monitor on Wednesday. The report states that while the national economy shows modest signs of adjustment, growth remains too weak to reduce poverty. According to the World Bank, the fiscal deficit narrowed to 8.8 percent of GDP in the 2025/2026 financial year. However, persistent inflation, foreign exchange shortages, and heavy reliance on imports for fuel and fertilizer continue to limit economic recovery.

In environmental developments, Minister of Natural Resources Patricia Wiskes presided over a stakeholder engagement meeting in Lilongwe on Wednesday to discuss the proposed Malawi Forestry Sector Turnaround Strategy for 2026 to 2036. According to the Malawi News Agency, the initiative brings together government agencies, the Anti-Corruption Bureau, and international partners to address environmental degradation through sustainable management and stronger law enforcement.
