Minister of Natural Resources Patricia Wiskes presided over a stakeholder engagement meeting in Lilongwe on September 23 to discuss the draft Malawi Forestry Sector Turnaround Strategy 2026-2036, according to the Malawi News Agency. The meeting convened officials from the Department of Forestry, the Anti-Corruption Bureau, and the defence sector to outline measures for forest restoration and sustainable environmental management. The proposed strategy focuses on improving climate resilience, increasing community participation, and strengthening law enforcement to combat illegal deforestation, the agency reports.
Update: Following earlier weather alerts, the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services issued fresh warnings on September 21 and September 22 regarding strong Mvuma winds. According to the department's latest five-day forecast, an unstable easterly air mass over Malawi will continue to produce cool, windy conditions in the mornings. Forecasters predict these patterns will transition into warm and hot afternoons, bringing a chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms across the region, the department stated.
