The Malawi government has removed 298 teachers and public officers from the September 2026 payroll as part of an ongoing effort to eliminate ghost workers and manage public expenditure, according to Malawi Cables Online. The Department of Human Resource Management and Development initiated the removals after the individuals failed to attend a nationwide personnel audit. The affected personnel have been directed to present original employment documents in person at Capital Hill in Lilongwe before the end of the month to resolve their status.

In the utilities sector, the Blantyre Water Board has received a secret K24 billion financial bailout, Nation Online reported on September 26. The unpublicized capital injection was provided to help the state-owned utility settle its electricity arrears with Escom, a move aimed at reducing its massive annual losses.
