Malawi will soon introduce nuclear medicine facilities in Lilongwe to improve cancer diagnosis and treatment across the country, according to the Nyasa Times. Speaking ahead of the 5th Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) Research Dissemination Conference on September 30, oncologist Dr. Leo Masamba announced the new facilities. He also highlighted the rollout of Malawi's newly published Cancer Treatment Guidelines, which aim to assist primary and secondary health workers in identifying cases earlier and improving patient referral networks.
In a separate development for regional medical services, the Ministry of Health and the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation report the launch of a specialized surgical and medical camp at Mzuzu Central Hospital. The initiative, run in partnership with the Tanzanian government, brings specialists from Tanzania's Benjamin Mkapa Hospital to Malawi's Northern Region. These experts are providing consultations and surgeries in fields where specialist access is often limited, including neurosurgery, cardiology, and orthopaedics. The camp runs through October 2 and serves as a practical skills exchange program for Malawian and Tanzanian health professionals before moving to Lilongwe.
