A severe fuel shortage is currently paralyzing Malawi's economy as long queues for diesel and petrol disrupt transport and business operations, according to Nyasa Times. The crisis is rooted in the country's chronic foreign exchange scarcity, which has left importers struggling to secure the two million litres of fuel required daily. The lack of dollars has triggered a damaging economic cycle, stalling the agricultural and mining exports needed to rebuild foreign reserves and drawing sharp local media criticism over the government's handling of the shortage, the Daily Times reports.

Update: Following the recent launch of Malawi's $30 billion mining roadmap, Lindian Resources confirmed that its Kangankunde rare earths project has received export clearance and remains on track for initial production in late 2026, according to Business News. The announcement followed a site visit by Lindian executives and Minister of Mining Thoko Tembo. The mine represents a major step away from the country's historical reliance on agriculture, integrating Malawi into the global critical minerals supply chain.
