Update: The technical issues delaying Malawi's tobacco registration have escalated, leaving thousands of smallholder farmers stranded. According to Nyasa Times, the rollout of the new Know Your Grower system has faced severe interruptions due to persistent network failures and faulty fingerprint scanners. Farmers in districts such as Lilongwe, Ntcheu, and Rumphi report sleeping outside registration centres for several days. Many growers say the extended wait times have forced them to spend the money they originally budgeted for transport and farm inputs just to buy food while they wait in line.
Meanwhile, the Fertilizer Association of Malawi has warned that current national stocks are falling significantly short of annual requirements. As reported by ZBS News, the association disclosed that the country has secured approximately 148,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser, which is well below the national need of 450,000 to 475,000 metric tonnes. Only about 35,000 metric tonnes are physically in Malawi, while the remainder is either at the ports of Beira and Dar es Salaam or in transit at sea. Association officials noted that foreign exchange shortages and logistical hurdles continue to slow down the procurement process ahead of the rainy season.
In an effort to support local agriculture through these continuing difficulties, Seed Co Malawi is encouraging growers to adopt digital technology for the upcoming planting window. According to AfricaBrief, the company recently upgraded its Seedney mobile application to provide immediate agronomic guidance using artificial intelligence. The digital platform offers farmers specific advice on maize planting schedules, crop selection, and methods for protecting harvests from adverse weather conditions.
