The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested former Malawi Defence Force commander General Paul Valentino Phiri on Thursday on five counts related to abuse of office and dealing in terrorist property, according to Nyasa Times and Malawi24. The charges stem from allegations that the retired general facilitated illegal arms trafficking in June and July 2025. Following his arrest, Phiri was taken into police custody after his scheduled hearing in Lilongwe was abruptly postponed to Friday without an official explanation.

In a separate legal development, the Industrial Relations Court has ruled that the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) unlawfully dismissed its former director general, Daud Suleman. According to Nyasa Times, the court found on Wednesday that the regulatory body breached employment laws by failing to provide Suleman with a fair disciplinary hearing to address allegations before terminating his contract.
