Update: Following recent warnings about extreme flooding and Lake Malawi reaching a 45-year high, the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services issued a new safety advisory on Thursday for all lake users. Strong Mwera winds continue to sweep across the country's water bodies. According to the department, the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone is expected to bring further thunderstorms and heavy rains across northern and southern areas.

These domestic forecasts align with regional alerts from the NOAA Climate Prediction Center and the Famine Early Warning Systems Network. According to their latest assessments released this week, ongoing La NiƱa conditions and persistent heavy rainfall keep the risk of localised flooding high across Malawi and neighbouring nations.

Update: Building on earlier announcements that Malawi will host an African climate conference, preparations are now underway for the 5th African Regional Conference on Loss and Damage. The event will take place in Lilongwe from March 25 to 27. According to Atlas Malawi, the Civil Society Network on Climate Change is organising the gathering to secure fair climate financing. Network coordinator Julius Ng'oma noted that the conference will help African nations overcome barriers to accessing the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage.
