Update: The National Planning Commission and the Ministry of Agriculture are preparing to host the National Agrifood Systems Investment Symposium on October 5 in Lilongwe. According to the National Planning Commission, the event will focus on securing private sector funding for agriculture and will unveil the latest design for the Malawi Mega Farms Initiative. Speaking ahead of the event, NPC Director General Fredrick Changaya stated that collective efforts and increased private investments are necessary to expand the country's agricultural capacity.

Update: In response to continued El Niño weather warnings, agriculture experts are pressing farmers to adopt new protective measures for the upcoming planting season. During a meeting of the Kasungu District Agriculture Extension Coordinating Committee on October 2, Renaissance Seed Company officials urged farmers to switch to drought-tolerant, early-maturing seed varieties to prevent widespread crop failures, according to Malawi24. To help offset costs, a new installment payment plan has been introduced for local farmers. Concurrently, insurance representatives in Mchinji District advised farming communities to purchase agricultural insurance to protect their livestock and crops from severe weather risks.

Update: Rising staple food costs continue to threaten households across the country. The Famine Early Warning Systems Network projects Crisis-level food insecurity in southern and central Malawi through January 2027. A recent FEWS NET report notes that national average maize prices climbed 16 percent to 907 kwacha per kilogram. To secure domestic food supplies, the Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation and the National Food Reserve Agency are actively purchasing maize at 900 kwacha per kilogram to add to their existing reserve of 82,000 metric tons.
