A 37-year-old teacher, Suhel Shirajamed Gangat, was arrested at Bakili Muluzi International Airport after customs officials discovered R40,000, which is approximately K4.8 million, concealed in his luggage, according to Nyasa Times. Gangat was intercepted during routine scanning as he was preparing to board a flight to South Africa.
Airport police spokesperson Dorrah Machila Chathyoka stated that the suspect failed to provide supporting documentation for the cash and was subsequently charged with illegal possession of foreign currency. The arrest occurs as the country continues to face severe foreign exchange shortages and strict limits on individual currency disbursements.
In separate legal developments, Chief Justice Rizine Mzikamanda made a public appeal in Blantyre on Friday, urging Malawians to keep their faith in the country's justice system. Nyasa Times reports that the Chief Justice asked citizens to maintain trust in the courts despite ongoing administrative and procedural delays. He made the remarks during the formal opening of the 2026/2027 judicial calendar.
