Update: Following earlier coverage of the deepening fuel and forex crisis, President Peter Mutharika used his first-year anniversary in office to address Malawi's mixed economic indicators. According to Nyasa Times, the administration has successfully brought down inflation from 29 percent to 20 percent and reduced the price of maize from over K80,000 to roughly K42,000 per bag. However, the overall economic expansion is estimated at a sluggish 2.8 percent, which leaves income per capita flat.

The fuel shortage continues to threaten the country's economic progress. Nyasa Times reports that petrol prices have surged by 61 percent to K5,619 per litre over the past year, while diesel has climbed 68 percent to K5,863. Economist Dr. Ben Dzolowere criticized Energy Minister Jean Mathanga for remaining silent as fuel queues paralyze major cities like Lilongwe, Blantyre, and Mzuzu. Dzolowere warned that the resulting spike in transport costs is feeding into inflation and crippling small businesses.

Foreign exchange scarcity also remains a critical hurdle. In an interview with the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation, President Mutharika acknowledged that forex shortages are his most complicated challenge and warned citizens that higher taxes will be necessary for long-term recovery, according to Nyasa Times. The president confirmed that the government is currently holding talks with the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank to revive the Extended Credit Facility. In response to the crisis, UTM Party leader Dalitso Kabambe has called for an independent audit of forex allocations to determine how scarce currency is being distributed, reports Malawi24.

Meanwhile, in an effort to stimulate economic growth and secure private sector capital, the government is preparing to host the National Agrifood Systems Investment Symposium on October 5 in Lilongwe. According to Nyasa Times, the event is organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Industrialisation, Trade, Business, and Tourism. National Planning Commission Director General Fredrick Changaya stated that developing the agrifood sector is critical to achieving the Malawi 2063 development agenda.
