Young Malawian environmentalists affiliated with Climate YES and the Malawi Creation Care Network led a peaceful demonstration to secure the enforcement of the country's nationwide ban on thin plastics, the Anglican Communion News Service reported on Thursday. The youth advocacy effort sought to uphold the environmental ban against sustained resistance from manufacturers, aiming to reduce the plastic waste threatening local drainage systems, rivers, and wildlife habitats.

In regional climate news, the World Food Programme continues to warn that much of central and southern Africa is expected to experience below-normal rainfall and above-average temperatures during the 2026/2027 rainy season. The agency notes that these expected dry spells threaten to disrupt planting activities and reduce upcoming maize harvests, which could elevate food insecurity across the affected areas.

Update: The Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services continues to forecast hot, dry, and hazy conditions across most parts of the country, driven by an easterly air mass. The department has issued fresh advisories for moderate to strong Mvuma winds expected to sweep over Lake Malawi and other inland water bodies, urging all lake users to remain alert to protect lives and property.
