The Malawi Law Commission is preparing a draft amendment to the 1988 Refugee Act to ease legal restrictions on displaced populations, according to SOS Médias Burundi. Following recent consultations at the Dzaleka refugee camp, the proposed legislation focuses on granting refugees the right to secure formal employment, engage in trade, and move freely across the country. The commission intends to submit the revised legal framework to Parliament for adoption before the end of the year. This move would alter the living conditions for the more than 80,000 refugees and asylum seekers currently hosted in Malawi.

Update: In continuing political developments, the Malawi Congress Party has publicly confirmed its intention to back Lazarus Chakwera for the 2030 elections. Nyasa Times reports that party spokesperson Jessie Kabwila stated on October 16 that the party is prepared to rewrite internal constitutional rules. Building on earlier discussions of an amendment, these proposed changes would officially remove current clauses that restrict defeated presidential candidates from leading the party in subsequent contests.
