Malawian economists and social protection advocates are urging the government to reduce non-essential expenditures and improve domestic revenue collection ahead of the 2026/27 mid-year budget review. According to Nation Online, the recommendations align with the International Monetary Fund's October 2026 World Economic Outlook, which concluded that targeted cash transfers are more cost-effective than broad subsidies in protecting vulnerable households from living cost shocks. Advocates argue that cutting spending is necessary to finance social protection programmes given uncertain development partner funding.

Meanwhile, the African Development Bank has warned that financing risks could disrupt Malawi's economic growth. In its October 2026 Malawi Economic Update, the bank stated that declining donor support, high debt distress, and a weak domestic capital market are deepening the country's funding gaps, according to Nation Online. The report estimated that Malawi needs an additional US$3.3 billion annually to meet its 2030 development goals. The bank urged the government to pursue fiscal consolidation, debt restructuring, and higher foreign exchange reserves to attract foreign direct investment.

United Kingdom-based research firm Business Monitor International also warned that Malawi's inflation could accelerate in the coming months and further squeeze household incomes. According to Nation Online, the firm noted that official inflation figures, which dropped to 20 percent in August, likely understate the actual cost of living. Business Monitor International stated that the widespread use of the parallel foreign exchange market has pushed the true cost of imported goods above official prices. The firm warned that prices could rise further if the kwacha is devalued to secure a new International Monetary Fund programme.
