Update: In response to the surging cholera threat exacerbated by recent floods, Bread and Water for Africa has partnered with the Faithful Heart Foundation to construct new sanitation facilities at Rabu Primary School in Chikwawa District. According to a statement released on March 16 by Bread and Water for Africa, the project aims to protect 1,180 students from waterborne diseases through improved water and hygiene infrastructure. This local intervention follows recent warnings from the World Health Organisation regarding a sharp spike in cholera cases across Southern Africa.
Faithful Heart Foundation chairperson Alex Steven Bango stated that the new sanitary facilities will help reduce school dropouts and the spreading of diseases. According to Bread and Water for Africa, the project will restore privacy and dignity for students, particularly girls, while supporting broader public health efforts to contain the cholera bacterium amidst regional infrastructure damage.
