Filmmakers Question Digital Returns as Malawi Marks 10 Years Since Grace Chinga's Passing

Thursday, March 19, 2026

Malawian filmmakers are expressing growing hesitation over digital release models, with local producer Jones Mbera stating that online distribution is currently failing the country's movie industry. According to Nation Online, Mbera noted that many creators remain apprehensive about sharing their content on internet platforms due to ongoing profitability issues and structural challenges that prevent local films from finding financial success online.

In lifestyle and networking news, FDH Bank plc and Ekhaya Group have officially renewed their partnership with the event platform Sunday Soirée. Nyasa Times reports that the collaboration will feature six main events throughout 2026, starting with the "Les Trois" gathering in Lilongwe on March 29, alongside several smaller pop-up experiences. The partnership is designed to provide entertainment for clients while offering a space to support and promote young Malawian entrepreneurs and small businesses in the creative sector.

Meanwhile, the country's music community is paying tribute to the late gospel star Grace Chinga, marking exactly a decade since her passing. According to Nation Online, fans and industry figures are remembering the renowned vocalist, who died in March 2016, and are taking time to honour her lasting musical contributions to Malawi's gospel sector.
