The Malawi Law Society has called on government to put rule-of-law and justice-sector reforms at the centre of the 2026-2027 national budget, according to a public statement by the Society. The group said the President’s State of the Nation Address delivered on February 13, 2026 did not address operationalisation of the Judicial Reform Acts or the rule of law, which it described as a missed opportunity, according to the Malawi Law Society. The Society said it expects the 2026-2027 budget to spell out funding and implementation steps, including work needed to operationalise the Judicial Reform Acts and related accountability measures, according to the Malawi Law Society.

Update: On the Amaryllis Hotel pension-fund controversy, Nyasa Times reports that the Malawi Law Society criticised the Anti-Corruption Bureau after the ACB cleared officers linked to the planned Public Service Pension Trust Fund purchase, and said the outcome raised questions about the credibility and independence of the ACB’s probe. Nyasa Times reports that the Law Society also backed the Reserve Bank of Malawi’s intervention, including action by the Registrar of Financial Institutions to have the transaction reversed. The Times Group reports that the Reserve Bank of Malawi, through its role as Registrar of Financial Institutions, directed PSPTF to withdraw its purchase agreement for the hotel.
