Russian President Vladimir Putin has appointed Sergey Berdnikov as the new ambassador to Malawi, holding the position concurrently with Zimbabwe. According to the African Initiative news agency, the March 20 decrees also relieved former ambassador Nikolai Krasilnikov of his duties in both nations. Berdnikov is a veteran diplomat who has been in the Russian foreign service since 1991 and previously served as the ambassador to Ghana and Liberia from 2021 to 2026.
In international humanitarian developments, a United Kingdom-registered Islamic charity has stepped in to help address Malawi's severe food shortages. The Mail & Guardian reports that the Faizan Global Relief Foundation recently launched a Ramadan food distribution campaign aimed at reaching 100,000 vulnerable households across the country. This large-scale intervention comes as the Malawian government faces a 34.1 million dollar funding gap in its annual lean-season relief programme. The expanded presence of non-traditional relief organisations highlights a shift in international donor patterns, prompting the Department of Disaster Management Affairs to urge all recipients to publicly account for incoming foreign assistance.
