Malawi's public universities are set to double their undergraduate intake to clear a backlog of qualified applicants, according to Nation Online. Backed by K234.3 billion in the 2026/2027 national budget for university operations and development, the Ministry of Education policy aims to expand tertiary access. Officials from Mzuzu University and the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences confirmed their commitment to managing the increased enrollment while maintaining academic standards across their campuses.

In the secondary education sector, the Private Schools Association of Malawi has formally appealed to the government to review its recent directive banning fee-based extra lessons during school holidays, reports Nyasa Times. The association's General Secretary Henry Kumwenda argued that a total ban disadvantages learners and proposed a specific exemption allowing voluntary holiday classes for Form 2 and Form 4 students preparing for their upcoming Malawi National Examinations Board exams.

Meanwhile, an artificial intelligence learning tool called "Blind Classroom" is improving education for visually impaired students at the Chilanga School for the Blind in Kasungu District, according to The Rising Nepal. Developed by Malawian innovator Staff Nyoni, the system uses voice commands to convert written lessons into interactive audio content, allowing students to navigate coursework independently and improve their grades without relying constantly on teachers or Braille books.
