Crime & Justice Brief: Police Charge Three for Ivory Possession as Anti-Trafficking Efforts Expand

Three men are facing charges in Chikwawa for the illegal possession of raw ivory, according to African Culture TV. The suspects, identified as Tobias Kandiado, Steven Kamfosi, and Brandon Njunga, were apprehended by police following a tip-off from the public. Chikwawa Police spokesperson Chancy Mfune Zare confirmed that the individuals were offering the ivory for sale without permission from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife. The suspects are expected to appear in court to face charges of illegal possession of specimens of listed species once their paperwork is completed.

In separate law enforcement news, the Malawi Police Service has issued a formal warning to local artisans against assisting criminals, The Daily Times reports. Additionally, Malawi has joined a regional fight against human trafficking. According to The Daily Times, stakeholders are actively urging the country to take further action to stop the illicit trade and protect vulnerable people.
