Update: Malawi continues to grapple with the aftermath of recent severe flooding, with the government reiterating a previously reported 59 billion kwacha shortfall in its 209 billion kwacha disaster response budget, Nyasa Times reports. Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Justin Saidi, confirmed the funding gap during a visit to a relief camp in Bereu, Traditional Authority Maseya. The deficit comes as the scale of the disaster comes into clearer focus, with recent assessments indicating the heavy rains damaged critical infrastructure across the country.

The recurring financial strain has increased calls for proactive environmental management and risk reduction. According to Nyasa Times, social commentator Ernest Mthindwa has urged authorities to enforce long-delayed relocation policies to move vulnerable communities to safer ground. Furthermore, Mthindwa highlighted rampant deforestation as a primary driver of the worsening floods. He called on the government and local citizens to commit to extensive tree planting along riverbanks and degraded areas to slow floodwaters and build long-term climate resilience.
