Update: As Malawi continues its recovery from recent severe floods that left 13 dead, the infrastructural toll is mounting. The Nyasa Times notes that fresh flooding this month submerged sections of the Chikwawa to Nsanje road, paralysing trade and transport in the Shire Valley.

The Department of Disaster Management Affairs confirmed that heavy rains between March 15 and March 18 affected 9,598 households across 16 councils. The agency is actively distributing relief aid to displaced communities, according to official situation reports.

With climate variability swinging between dry spells and destructive floods, natural shocks in Malawi are continuous rather than isolated events. These extreme weather conditions are destroying agricultural output and forcing the government to divert public funds from long-term development to emergency response.
