President Arthur Peter Mutharika has pardoned 27 inmates as a gesture of mercy ahead of the 2026 Eid and Easter holidays, according to Nyasa Times. A statement from the Ministry of Homeland Security, signed by Secretary Linda Pacharo Moyo, indicated that the clemency was exercised under Section 89(2) of the Constitution. Beneficiaries of the pardon included women, the elderly, chronically ill inmates, and individuals admitted to public universities. Authorities noted that all released prisoners had served at least half of their sentences and demonstrated clear signs of rehabilitation.

In a separate development, the government has launched a fresh recruitment process for the Director General of the Anti-Corruption Bureau, The Daily Times reports. Candidate shortlisting for the position is scheduled to take place this week.

Meanwhile, Members of Parliament are pressing for changes in public spending management. Lawmakers have flagged inefficiencies in the utilisation of health sector funds, leading a parliamentary committee to call for structural funding reforms, according to The Daily Times. Alongside these financial debates, MPs have revived demands for local councils to handle disaster response operations to improve crisis management at the community level.
