Update: Justice Ministry Advances ACB Director Recruitment

Minister of Justice Charles Mhango has officially launched the recruitment process for a new Director General of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), according to the Nyasa Times. Following a recent High Court decision by Judge Simeon Mdeza that upheld Ombudsman Grace Malera's disqualification of previously shortlisted candidates for failing to meet statutory requirements, a special committee has been activated to vet a fresh pool of 50 applicants. The Nyasa Times reports that the shortlisting phase is underway this week, with formal interviews scheduled to take place in Lilongwe on April 9 and 10, 2026. The successful candidate will be offered a renewable three-year contract to lead the anti-graft operations of the country.

Amnesty International Urges Police to Return Refugee Property

In a separate legal development, Amnesty International has called on Malawian authorities to establish a transparent procedure for 39 refugees and asylum seekers to reclaim their confiscated property. According to an Amnesty International report published on Monday, 79 shipping containers belonging to the refugees were initially seized by the Malawi Police and the Malawi Defence Force in May 2023. The containers, which were used to store grain and other merchandise, were subsequently auctioned off on March 11, 2026. The rights group is now pressing the government to allow the affected individuals, including a recognised Congolese refugee named Athanase Mvuyekure, to formally verify their ownership and recover their assets.
