Malawi's Parliament has passed the K10.978 trillion National Budget for the 2026/2027 financial year after concluding the Committee of Supply stage, according to Nyasa Times. The Ministry of Agriculture secured the largest single allocation at K971.3 billion to fund food security and irrigation projects, while the Ministry of Health received K558.07 billion. Funding was also approved for the Malawi Defence Force, the Malawi Police Service, and governance oversight bodies such as the Anti-Corruption Bureau.

A political power struggle is unfolding within the ruling Democratic Progressive Party. Nyasa Times reports that President Arthur Peter Mutharika has demanded the immediate resignation of Vice-President Jane Ansah in a reported attempt by his inner circle to control the presidential succession. Tensions increased over conflicting reports about the funding for Ansah's December 2025 trip to the United Kingdom. Following the dispute, her security detail was reduced and key portfolios, including the Department of Disaster Management Affairs, were transferred to the Office of the President and Cabinet.

Meanwhile, lawmakers are proposing major changes to Malawi's mining regulations to increase national revenue and address foreign exchange shortages. The Parliamentary Cluster Committee on Natural Resources and Climate Change suggested that foreign mining investors should be required to pay fees in United States dollars, while local investors would face a minimum fee of K1 million, Nyasa Times reports. Committee co-chairperson Tiaone Hendry described the existing K10,000 mining fee as too low, recommending additional funding of K43.9 billion for the Geological Survey Department to improve domestic exploration operations.
