UNICEF Rapid Response Teams Contain Cholera Outbreaks in Kasungu and Rumphi

Friday, March 27, 2026

Malawi is seeing localized success in its ongoing fight against cholera through the deployment of rapid response teams in vulnerable districts, according to UNICEF. In Kasungu district, the Kasalika Health Centre is utilizing Facility Rapid Response Teams to immediately investigate and contain suspected cases. These units, comprising clinicians, nurses, pharmacists, and environmental health officers, respond directly to household alerts. Upon arrival, the teams conduct detailed clinical assessments while evaluating local sanitation, waste disposal, and hand-washing facilities to prevent further transmission.

Similar grassroots strategies are proving effective in the northern district of Rumphi, where community volunteers surrounding the Mzokoto Health Centre have successfully contained the disease. Following the regional devastation previously caused by Cyclone Chido, the local District Health Office trained 175 Community Rapid Response Team volunteers with UNICEF backing. These volunteers focus on identifying and rehydrating patients within the critical first few hours of symptom onset. Health officials credit this rapid intervention model with stopping isolated cases from developing into broader outbreaks across the district.
