President Peter Mutharika met with Chinese Ambassador Lu Xu at Kamuzu Palace on March 26 to discuss bilateral economic cooperation. According to the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation, Mutharika outlined his administration's priorities of economic recovery and youth job creation. The president emphasised a short-term focus on the "Four Fs and M" framework, aiming to stabilise food security, fertiliser availability, foreign exchange reserves, fuel, and medicines. Investigative Malawi reports that this meeting follows a recent 300 million yuan grant agreement for infrastructure and the cancellation of $20 million in bilateral debt by Beijing. Additionally, China will offer zero-tariff treatment for Malawian exports starting in May 2026.
In the currency markets, the Malawian kwacha traded at approximately 1,733 against the US dollar on March 27. According to Trading Economics, the exchange rate has remained largely flat over the past month as the country continues to manage high inflation and foreign exchange pressures.
On the business and enterprise front, Malawian entrepreneur Tadala Mtimuni has been shortlisted for the 2026 Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation. According to The Next Africa, Mtimuni was selected on March 26 for creating "MalawiDrop," a low-cost water treatment device designed to provide safe drinking water to off-grid rural communities and stimulate local commercial solutions. Furthermore, the COMESA Federation of Women in Business hosted a regional economic webinar on March 26 to help female entrepreneurs in Malawi and neighbouring countries manage their finances and expand their commercial operations.
