A new economic pilot program has launched in Malawi to test the effects of supply-side cash on local markets, according to GiveDirectly. Backed by funding from GiveWell, the initiative provides one-time cash grants between $550 and $1,100 directly to local businesses, such as hardware stores, mills, and grocers. The program aims to measure whether funding small enterprises a month before consumer demand increases can boost overall economic growth and local business revenues. Implementations of the cash distributions have already begun, with further pilots scheduled to roll out by June.

In other business news, executives Thom Mpinganjira and Jimmy Korea Mpatsa are scheduled to deliver keynote presentations on finance and economic empowerment at the 2026 Global Ironman Conference in Lilongwe. According to African Culture TV, the event, hosted by Prophet Shepherd Bushiri, is expected to draw thousands of local and international delegates. The conference will focus on sharing practical strategies for wealth creation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable economic development.

On the currency markets, the Malawian Kwacha remains stable against the United States Dollar, with the exchange rate holding unchanged at 1,733.67 as of March 30, 2026, reports Trading Economics. The currency has remained flat over the past month, recording a slight 0.97 percent depreciation over the trailing 12-month period.
