The Malawi Bureau of Standards has upgraded its food safety testing laboratories using nuclear technology to better monitor chemical and radiological hazards, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency. The new equipment allows public health officials to detect contaminants such as mycotoxins, pesticide residues, and toxic metals in domestic staples and export goods. Officials state this integration of nuclear science into routine certification processes will improve national food control and consumer protection.

In southern Malawi, collapsed infrastructure continues to restrict access to essential medical services. According to AfricaBrief, the prolonged failure to repair the Chapananga Bridge has left thousands of residents in Chikwawa and Mwanza districts isolated from primary care. Patients, including expectant mothers, are currently forced to pay for dangerous river crossings or travel more than 100 kilometres to reach Mwanza District Hospital and the Misomali Health Facility.

In clinical research, medRxiv recently published an analysis evaluating the effectiveness of oral cholera vaccines deployed during the Blantyre outbreak. Researchers are using local health facility data to assess the vaccination campaign and improve future disease response strategies.
