Health authorities from the National TB and Leprosy Elimination Program (NTLEP) are urging Malawian communities to discard misinformation and traditional myths regarding tuberculosis. Speaking at a recent panel, NTLEP Deputy Program Manager Dr. Tisungane Mwenyenkulu warned that unverified beliefs are causing patients to abandon their medication midway, according to Nyasa Times. Dr. Yusuf Saidi, the Drug-Resistant TB Coordinator, added that poor adherence to first-line treatments, along with social stigma, is driving the spread of difficult to treat, drug-resistant strains of the disease. Officials stressed that early hospital-based diagnosis and strict treatment compliance remain the best defense against tuberculosis.

In public health developments in the southern region, the non-governmental organization Water For People has launched a new sanitation initiative in Neno District. Zodiak Broadcasting Station reports that the organization recently trained local masons in the construction of corbelled latrines to improve community hygiene standards. The project focuses on rocky areas where standard pits are difficult to dig, helping to prevent future outbreaks of waterborne illnesses.
