Update: Humanitarian relief efforts in flood-affected regions of southern Malawi remain constrained by damaged infrastructure, according to an April 1 report by Islamic Relief. In the hard-hit Chikwawa District, rising waters from the Shire and Mwanza rivers have left the road from Chikwawa to Nsanje impassable at the Bereu Trading Centre, limiting access for emergency responders. Relief teams are currently conducting needs assessments in coordination with the Department of Disaster Management Affairs and the Malawi Red Cross Society to deliver emergency sanitation assistance and water treatment supplies.

Environmental and weather authorities warn that the country faces continued climate threats over the coming week. In an April 2 climate prediction briefing, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecast another wave of heavy precipitation for northern Malawi, warning that the incoming weather maintains a high risk of localized flooding. Malawi's Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services corroborated this outlook, issuing advisories for windy conditions, thunderstorms, and heavy rains persisting over lakeshore and northern areas.
