Speaker of Parliament Sameer Suleman met with German Ambassador Ute König to secure backing for enhanced parliamentary oversight and accountability, according to the Parliament of Malawi. During the meeting, Ambassador König pledged Germany's support, noting that the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) could facilitate capacity-building sessions for lawmakers. She also reaffirmed Germany's ongoing commitment to supporting social protection initiatives, including social cash transfer programmes.
In a separate diplomatic engagement, Chinese Ambassador Lu Xu formally presented a donation to the Beautify Malawi Trust at the State House, the Chinese Embassy reports. Receiving the donation, First Lady Gertrude Mutharika thanked China for its long-term assistance and highlighted a readiness to strengthen bilateral cooperation in sectors such as education and sanitation.
Meanwhile, the United Nations' International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced it is partnering with the Malawi Bureau of Standards to upgrade the country's food safety and export systems. According to the IAEA, the collaboration uses nuclear and isotopic testing equipment to detect contaminants in key commodities such as milk, tea, and macadamia nuts. This support aims to help Malawian agricultural producers meet strict international market standards.
